Frostmage: the build, the nine signature runes, and why it's the AFK king
✍️ Alice・愛麗沙
⚠️ This class is confirmed live on Taiwan’s server today — Frostmage’s own build tool (
/meta/frostmage) is this site’s single most-visited class page. But the specific gear, rune and stat data below is Korean community research (namu.wiki class sheets, cross-checked against two independent DC Inside threads), because Nexon does not publish build guides — only the drop tables and skill descriptions in-client. Numbers marked HIGH confidence are corroborated by two sources; MED is single-source. Three of the nine class runes listed have effect text that is unconfirmed — that’s stated where it applies, not smoothed over.
The one mechanic that explains the entire build
Frostmage’s armour runes key off a single condition — “resource below 50%” — and its skills spend resource fast enough that the bar sits under that line more or less permanently. A second condition, “attacking a frozen target,” is just as reliably met, because Frostmage is its own freeze source. Every other class needs a teammate, a pet, or a lucky proc to open these damage windows; Frostmage opens both of its own, every fight, without any input from the player. That’s the whole reason this class tops the community’s auto-battle recommendations (below) — its damage conditions can’t be missed by an AI that doesn’t manage cooldowns or timing.
Full loadout: BIS, mid-tier, and free-to-play
| Slot | BIS (legendary ★6) | Mid-tier (epic ★5) | F2P (elite ★4 or below) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Thousand Swords (legendary) | Duel (epic) | Duel (elite) |
| Hat | Rock Giant | Rock Giant (no lower substitute exists) | Reassurance |
| Top | Shattered Ice (prototype) | Shattered Ice (no lower substitute exists) | Shattered Ice |
| Bottom | Condensed Mana (prototype) | Deprivation | Hunger |
| Gloves | Doom’s Brand | Barren Land | Stability |
| Shoes | Resonating Crystal | Enlightenment | Reassurance |
| Necklace | Frost Blade+ (mods skill 1) | Frost Blade (no +) | North Wind (mods skill 2 instead) |
| Ring 1 | Aurora+ (mods skill 5) | Aurora (no +) | Winter (mods skill 4 instead) |
| Ring 2 | North Wind+ (mods skill 2) | North Wind (no +) | Icicle (mods skill 3 instead) |
| Emblem | Splendor | Splendor | Speed/Intensity |
Two runes carry the whole kit and have no cheaper substitute — Shattered Ice (top) and, functionally, the resource-under-50% slot (Condensed Mana → Deprivation → Hunger is a real downgrade ladder, not three names for one thing: 15% attack → 9% → 5%-under-33%-HP). Doom’s Brand and Resonating Crystal are a matched raid-drop pair from Glas Ghaibhleann — equip both or neither, since their bonuses key off each other.
Thousand Swords note: Frostmage is on the “sword class” list this rune counts (Warrior, Greatsword, Swordmaster, Frostmage, Rogue, Dualblade — the exact roster is the community’s best inference, not an official list). Maxing all six classes’ levels is what gets the full +24%; on a server where one of those six classes (Warrior, on TW as of this writing) isn’t live yet, the practical ceiling is five classes = +20%.
The nine class-only runes: what each one actually changes
Class-signature runes live in the three accessory slots (necklace, two rings) and rewrite a specific skill’s behaviour rather than adding a flat percentage. Three of the nine are unconfirmed — listed honestly as such rather than guessed at:
| Rune | Grade | Modifies | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frost Blade (+) | Epic | Skill 1, Crystal Edge | Builds Frost Sword stacks; enough stacks upgrades it to Crystal Sword. BIS pick. |
| Aurora (+) | Epic | Skill 5, Frozen Orb | Replaces the orb with Frozen Glove: AoE burst damage + an ally-shielding ice veil. BIS pick. |
| North Wind (+) | Elite | Skill 2, Glacier Cutter | Faster cast, more charges, shorter cooldown. Community-preferred over Winter for this slot. |
| Winter (+) | Elite | Skill 4, Freezing Field | Damage escalates every second the field is active. Backup to North Wind. |
| Icicle (+) | Elite | Skill 3, Ice Spike | Auto-triggers Ice Spike (no resource cost, no cooldown) below a HP threshold — a survival rune, not a damage one. |
| Fragment (+) | Elite | Skill 3, Ice Spike | While Ice Spike is active, being hit builds counter-damage and an end-of-duration explosion. Also survival-oriented. |
| Glacier | Unconfirmed grade | Skill unclear | Catalogued only as “a core Glacier-line rune” — no verified effect text. |
| Snowfield | Unconfirmed grade | Likely Skill 5 | Community listing: replaces skill 5 with a large-area attack whose cooldown scales with frost spent. Not verified. |
| Crystal | Unconfirmed grade | Likely Skill 1 | Community listing: raises crit rate against frozen targets. Not verified. |
The three unconfirmed runes are plausibly the two new “reforge-a-skill” accessory runes Korea’s Season 1 gave every class (Sept 2025) — the timing fits — but until someone posts a confirmed effect line, this page won’t invent one for them. If a class-only rune from your own game client doesn’t match this table, tell us and we’ll fix it same-day.
Imprinting these works through the same universal system as every other rune — official success rates by star grade, gear vs. the emblem slot (which never fails):
| Star | Gear success | Emblem success |
|---|---|---|
| ★0–1 | 100% | 100% |
| ★2–3 | 60% | 100% |
| ★4 | 40% | 100% |
| ★5–6 | 25% | 100% |
Practical order: imprint the emblem rune first (guaranteed), imprint elite accessory runes early since they’re a placeholder you’ll overwrite anyway, and check the odds table before imprinting anything ★4 or higher — below 50% you may want to bank an imprint catalyst first.
Skill remodel is not a build choice — it’s one answer
Most classes argue over two or three remodel builds. Frostmage doesn’t: the Korean class sheet states it flatly as “156 is the correct answer” — skill 1 (Crystal Edge), skill 5 (Frozen Glove), skill 6 (Ultimate). Skill-level-30 priority follows the same order, with the ultimate ranked third because using it resets your Frost Sword stacks, so the ultimate itself should be levelled high enough that the reset is worth eating.
Rotation is short: 4 → 5 → 2 → 1×3 → Crystal Edge, repeating — but skill 3 carries an attack buff that has to be applied before the main rotation starts, so the real loop is “3 to open → 4-5-2-1 to deal damage → Crystal Edge to close.” After using the ultimate (which clears your Frost Sword stacks), the correct re-entry is 6 → 3 → 1 → 5: reapply the buff, immediately rebuild stacks with skill 1, then chain into skill 5’s burst.
The free-to-play reality check
Both class-defining accessory runes — Frost Blade+ and Aurora+ — are epic grade, not elite. That’s the single fact that matters for a non-paying account: the Korean community sheet calls Frostmage’s free-to-play entry barrier the steepest of any class, because without those two epics, the class’s actual mechanic (Frost Sword stacking, Frozen Glove burst) never turns on at all. The realistic free loadout substitutes North Wind+, Icicle+, and Winter+ — three elite runes that at least light up the accessory slots — while gold and shards get redirected to weapon enhancement instead of chasing accessory rarity. Full reasoning on that trade-off (and why enhancement usually wins that argument) lives in this site’s enhancement-order guide, which is not yet translated into English — the Traditional Chinese original has the complete argument and a build-time cost table.
One more free-to-play-relevant fact: skill level 30 requires an “all skills +1” line that only epic-and-above runes carry. A fully elite-equipped free account cannot reach 30 in any of its three remodelled skills — full stop, not a grind problem.
Where it actually ranks — and why the answer depends on which fight
Frostmage does not have one tier — it has three, and they disagree with each other for a real mechanical reason:
- Daily / AFK content: S-tier. Wide ground-effect AoE plus a permanently-taunting pet make this close to the easiest class in the game to leave on auto — matches the reasoning at the top of this page. One setup note: in open-world hunting grounds, turn skill 4 off in the auto-battle skill list — its ground effect keeps pulling in respawns and can loop forever unattended.
- Team raids: B-tier. Frostmage’s break-window damage bonus (party damage +20% on landing a break) matters less here, because raid bosses only enter break state at scripted moments, not on demand — the opposite of abyss content, where breaks are constant.
- Abyss: contested, and the disagreement is instructive. One community source rates it 0-tier (“indispensable”); Korea’s own player-logged data (not the same source) shows a real swing — C-tier through April–May 2025, then a June rebalance pushed it to B-tier, praised specifically for AoE clear speed in the two weekly-limited abyss dungeons. The two verdicts are not talking about the same content: the “0-tier” claim traces to a different game mode (a PvP ranking ladder from Season 1) than the actual PvE abyss numbers. Read any single-sentence tier claim about this class with that in mind.
What would overturn this page
This build assumes TW’s Season 0 ruleset matches KR’s — true today, not guaranteed to stay true. Two concrete tripwires: Korea’s Season 1 (Sept 2025) issues two new “reforge-a-skill” accessory runes per class, which would directly restructure this 156 remodel the moment TW reaches that content; and the three “unconfirmed” runes in the table above are placeholders precisely because nobody has posted verified effect text — if you have a screenshot of Glacier, Snowfield, or Crystal’s actual tooltip, send it and this page updates same-day, sourced to you.
This is a Taiwan-server build guide written directly from Korean community research and this site’s own Traditional Chinese originals (frostmage-s0-build, frostmage-runes) — not a machine translation of either. Cross-links above that point to not-yet-published English pages will redirect to this site’s Traditional Chinese hub until their English editions exist; that’s a deliberate “not translated yet” pointer rather than a broken link. The rune, gear and skill database behind the tables above is fully searchable at /en/meta/frostmage/ and /en/builder/.
