Is fashion ascension's 40% rigged? Plus four rules that bite
✍️ Alice・愛麗沙
Remember this first: when an ascension fails, the piece in the “main material” slot comes back to you — only the other two are lost. So always put the piece you most want to keep in the main slot; a failure really costs two pieces. With that rule, one ascension eats 2 ÷ success rate + 1 pieces on average: Advanced → Rare averages 6 pieces, Rare → Elite 7.67, and one Elite piece costs 46 Advanced pieces on average. Second: “the 40% is fake” cannot be shown from the numbers. A player on the Taiwanese board logged 109 tries with only 33% success — at a true 40%, luck that bad or worse happens about 8% of the time, and telling 33% from 40% apart takes around three hundred tries. Third, two set rules that make people waste money: wear two different four-piece sets mixed together and you get neither set bonus; and Legendary pants have no seasonal Legendary to synthesise, so three-piece ascension is the only way. For looks and stats both, put the set in slot 1 and the mixed outfit in slot 2.
The official rules: five steps, two extra materials, one rule that saves you
Taiwan’s published ascension odds are this table:
| Ascension step | Official probability | Extra materials |
|---|---|---|
| Normal → Advanced | 50% | None — three pieces of the same slot and grade is enough |
| Advanced → Rare | 40% | Advanced → Rare accepts any three Advanced pieces, from any slot |
| Rare → Elite | 30% | From Rare up, the three pieces must share both slot and grade |
| Elite → Epic | 25% | Also needs Magic Thread, a cash-shop item |
| Epic → Legendary | 25% | Also needs Magic Thread; one of the material slots may be filled with Mysterious Fabric instead |
Three fashion pieces of the same slot and grade — any slot for Normal → Advanced — give alchemy a chance at one piece a grade higher. Besides the lucky box, this is one of only two ways to start acquiring fashion without paying. But Elite → Epic and Epic → Legendary both additionally require Magic Thread, and Magic Thread has never carried a standalone price in Taiwan: the only retrievable source is a time-limited, purchase-capped abyss fashion support bundle. A free player can ride alchemy all the way to Elite for nothing, and the wall stands where it always did — above Epic.Spending guide
The material rules, from the official alchemy guide and Korean community write-ups:
- Materials must be “the same type and rarity.” Korea’s detail: Advanced → Rare accepts any three Advanced pieces, from any slot; from Rare up you need three pieces of the same slot and same rarity. Taiwanese players report something stricter for pants — “the three pants must be the same item” — so go by what the in-game interface accepts.
- Elite → Epic and Epic → Legendary also need Magic Thread, a cash-shop material; one material slot can be filled with Mysterious Fabric instead.
- On failure, the piece in the main-material slot is recovered safely; the other materials are gone. This rule covers all alchemy, and every calculation below rests on it.
- Epic → Legendary has a pity system: each failure gives 7 ascension ticket shards for that slot, and 100 shards turn automatically into a guaranteed Legendary ascension ticket for that slot — at most 15 failures.
- The official guide also carries a sentence few people notice: choosing materials of the same type and same slot as the main material makes ascending to Legendary easier. The size of that bonus is not published, but the direction is clear: matching pieces beat mismatched ones.
The arithmetic: how many pieces one step eats, and how bad bad luck is
Pieces per ascension. A step with success rate p takes 1 ÷ p tries on average; each failure costs 2 pieces (the main piece stays), and the final success consumes 3:
| Ascension | Published odds | Average tries | Average materials eaten | In Advanced pieces |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Advanced → Rare | 40% | 2.5 | 6 Advanced | 6 |
| Rare → Elite | 30% | 3.33 | 7.67 Rare | 46 |
| Elite → Epic | 25% | 4 | 9 Elite | 414 |
| Epic → Legendary | 25% | 4 (at most 15 failures) | 9 Epic (worst case 30 materials + the pity ticket) | — |
The player’s own estimate — “one Rare per 6 Advanced, one Elite per 7.666 Rare” — is exactly this formula. His instinct was right; the catch is that the formula already assumes 40% and 30% are true.
How bad bad luck is. The same player’s recorded numbers: Advanced → Rare, 36 successes in 109 tries (33.0%); Rare → Elite, 25 in 95 (26.3%). If the published odds are real:
| Record | Tries | Expected successes | Actual | Chance of this bad or worse |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Advanced → Rare at 40% | 109 | 43.6 (±5.1) | 36 | about 8% |
| Rare → Elite at 30% | 95 | 28.5 (±4.5) | 25 | about 25% |
| Both combined | 204 | 72.1 (±6.8) | 61 | about 5% |
About 5% sounds small, but weigh two things. First, the people who start recording are usually the ones who already feel unlucky — that filter alone sends unlucky samples to the forum. Second, separating “a true 33%” from “the published 40%” statistically takes about 300 tries; 109 is nowhere near. A Korean player also logged 25 Elite → Epic tries at 28% success, in line with the published 25%. The verdict: this record is not enough to show the odds are rigged, but it is a good start — come back at three hundred.
Set rules: mixing, the two slots, the robe
Mix two four-piece sets and the set bonus drops to zero. Set bonuses only count pieces from the same set: three pieces of one set plus shoes from another counts only the matching pieces. The Korean community records a more painful one: mixing a single Legendary into a full Epic set also removes the Epic set bonus — a different rarity counts as mixing too.
How the two slots count. Fashion has slot 1 and slot 2: stats come from whichever holds the higher quality, and at equal quality slot 1 wins. So the right layout is the completed set in slot 1 for the stats, the mixed look you like in slot 2 — you wear the look, the numbers follow the set.
Legendary pants have only one road. The Legendary fashion box holds only hat, top, gloves and shoes, and the Legendary four-piece sets don’t include pants either; there are no seasonal Legendary pants to synthesise, so three-piece ascension is the only way (one of the three may be Mysterious Fabric). Check this before you feed pants into synthesis.
Wear the robe on the page where it applies. Completing four pieces of the same Legendary series unlocks a quest for the Legendary robe; its trend-fashion effect (+10% charm on worn fashion, +1% armour defence) lasts 60 days from the moment you get it. A Taiwanese player whose charm suddenly dropped found the robe was on the second page, where the +10% did not trigger.
Do now, skip for now, and what would overturn this
Do now:
- Put the piece you most want to keep in the main-material slot; when gathering materials, prefer the same item and the same slot.
- Before ascending duplicate Advanced and Rare pieces, decide whether to ascend or dismantle: one Elite averages 46 Advanced pieces, while dismantling them straight into dye powder yields five times the powder you get from ascending first and dismantling after.
- Set in slot 1, mixed look in slot 2; wear the Legendary robe on the page where it takes effect.
- To test the odds, keep recording — but wait for 300 tries before drawing a conclusion.
Skip for now:
- Mixing two sets “to fill four pieces.” Only the same set counts; a mix counts for nothing.
- Chasing Legendary pants through synthesis. Pants only ascend.
What would overturn this:
- Taiwan changing its published ascension odds, or rewriting the main-material protection — the tables and piece counts would be recalculated from the new official numbers.
- Someone logging 300+ tries with success still clearly below the published rate — that is evidence worth reporting to the publisher, and this site will add the numbers.
